BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday said the country's banks may have to raise capital on the financial markets to meet higher provisioning requirements.
Rajoy, who was speaking at a news conference following a summit of European leaders in Brussels, said however that Spain would not need to tap more European funds on top of the 41-billion-euro ($53 billion) bailout it sought last year for its banks.
"In the case that it would be needed, I don't think it would have to come from the European Stability Mechanism. If there is a need to book provisions, I believe it could be done by tapping (financial) markets," Rajoy told journalists.
"In any case, we're talking about a very small amount and I am not worried whatsoever by this issue," he added. ($1 = 0.7766 euros)

The template that inspired Blood Dragon and some others: take a big hit, add supernatural or sci-fi elements and find a huge audience.
For anyone who?s used to flicking on appalling Eighties sci-fi movies on their TVs during ungodly hours, or those who used to make dreadful mistakes in renting Jean-Claude Van Damme VHSs back when that was a thing, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a richly relevant send-up.
You?re cast as Sergeant Rex Power Colt, a badass soldier voiced by the most thematically appropriate of actors: Michael Biehn.
After being betrayed early on, you?re thrown into a huge futuristic-via-the-Eighties world roamed by blood dragons, giant shiny dinosaurs that hunt down anything alive while you make tactical assaults on military bases.
It?s all played thoroughly for laughs, meaning that Blood Dragon?s relentless sense of irony and commitment to its choice target of parody makes it a far more valuable purchase than the more straight-faced shooters out there.
If you never played Far Cry 3, don?t worry about the prefix on Blood Dragon?s title. This is a totally standalone open world shooter that hits every note just right ? the garish art direction recalls questionable films like Battlefield Earth, the electro soundtrack has a ludicrous fistpumping energy to it and most importantly, Ubisoft doesn?t use its dreadful sources as an excuse for limp game design.
Based on Far Cry 3?s template of quick burst exploration and conquering, this is a microcosm of that title?s well-regarded freeform experience, with the added spectacle of watching massive lizards wage war with sci-fi soldiers.
The missions get progressively better, too, with more ambitious set pieces and the onset of more colourful.
The cutscenes are Blood Dragon?s secret stength, though. Presented in a kind of early CD-ROM era style with deliberately poor voice-acting and a silly script, it?s actually very funny, right down to details like masculine soldier handshakes where muscles instantly tense or outrageous cornball dialogue that speaks of a real love for the original low-budget material.
Despite its ties to the bigger Far Cry?series, then, Blood Dragon is a real one-off where its very existence is a pleasant surprise, as well as great counter-programming to shooters that take themselves far too seriously without the credibility to back them up.
ROCHESTER, Minn.?Individuals who drink coffee have a 20% lower risk for a particular autoimmune liver disease, according to new research presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW).
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., linked coffee consumption with reduced risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a disease of the bile ducts that causes inflammation and subsequent duct obstruction that ultimately can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, liver failure and biliary cancer.
"While rare, PSC has extremely detrimental effects," said Craig Lammert, M.D., instructor of medicine at Mayo Clinic. "We are always looking for ways to mitigate risk, and our first-time finding points to a novel environmental effect that might also help us to determine the cause of this and other devastating autoimmune diseases."
The study examined the largest cohort of patients with PSC and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) in the U.S. as well as a healthy control group. Data showed that coffee consumption was associated with reduced risk of PSC, but not PBC. PSC patients were much more likely to never consume coffee compared with the control group. The control group also spent nearly 20% more of their life regularly drinking coffee.
In 2010, a study published in the journal Hepatology found patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) who consume more than 2.25 cups of regular coffee daily have milder liver fibrosis.

Butler was on campus May 15 to give a lecture titled ?MOOCs and the Copyright Challenge: Fair Use in the Balance? as part of the Leading Voices in Higher Education.
An expert on copyright law, Butler graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law. At the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), he has researched a variety of legal issues connected to fair use, network neutrality, and the Patriot Act, and provided commentary on related court battles.
ARL, a nonprofit organization, addresses ?issues of concern to the library, research, higher education, and scholarly communities.? It was established in 1932 ?by the directors of 42 major university and research libraries that recognized the need for coordinated action and desired a forum to address common problems,? according to its website. Dartmouth College Library is one of the 125 members of ARL.

(Reuters) - A single winning ticket for a record Powerball lottery jackpot worth $590.5 million was sold in Florida, organizers said late on Saturday, but there was no immediate word about who won one of the largest jackpots in U.S. history.
The winning numbers from Saturday night's drawing were: 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball number of 11. The odds of winning were put at 1 in 175 million.
The winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a suburb of Tampa, according to the Florida Lottery.
The winner or winners had not come forward as of Sunday morning, said Connie Barnes, a Florida Lottery spokeswoman. The winning ticket holder's name will become part of the public record because a check will be made out to the winner, but that person or persons need not appear in public to acknowledge the prize, Barnes said.
The grand prize, accumulated after two months of drawings, surpassed the previous record Powerball payoff of $587.5 million set in November 2012.
The largest jackpot in U.S. history stands at $656 million, won in the Mega Millions lottery of March 2012. That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.
The Multi-State Lottery Association, based in Iowa, announced the Powerball results in a brief message on its website, saying, "There was one winner sold by the Florida Lottery for the last drawing's $590,500,000 grand prize."
The extremely long odds of winning did not deter people from buying tickets at staggering rates. California was selling $1 million in tickets every hour on Saturday, said Donna Cordova, a spokeswoman for the California Lottery, which has only been selling Powerball tickets since April 8.
The $2 tickets allow players to pick five numbers from 1 to 59, and a Powerball number from 1 to 35.
