Some Questions on Originality and being Unoriginal

Just as a rather broad question, what does canon apply to?
I know that there are canon characters being Monkey D. Luffy and Ichigo Kurosaki and then there's original which is quite literally anything you come up with. But when it comes to concepts, would a term you borrow form another source be a canon term? What I'm trying to say is; when creating a roleplay if you're a big One Piece fan and you use names like Alabasta and Grand Line but on the same note your role play has nothing to do with pirates and sailing. Would you be original or would that be declared unoriginal?

On a little deeper note, what if you use concepts from an anime/manga? For instance using an idea based of the Zanpakuto from Bleach: Weapons are given their own wills and souls, forcing the wielder to work with that spirit in order to obtain "releases" and enhance their own power. If you create your own terminology for the weapons and you add your own twists and such, would that still be considered original?

Thanks for baring with me here, I have one more question. Let's say you really like a certain plot twist or specific method of introducing characters. Well, would taking that twist from the source, be it a novel, manga or such, be considered unoriginal if you're using it in a completely different manner that the original? By doing such, would that force you to utilize that little disclaimer thing that states that your concepts are not original?

Thanks for reading, I hope I didn't make any of that confusing for anyone. ^^
