StreetEasy: Talk - Insurance Question???

My understanding is that your insurance is not entitled to money from their insurance until you are made whole. So the first $1000 in proceeds that comes from your neighbor should come to you first.

Put another way, if the neighbor's insurance is willing to pay a claim to your insurance, then they should also be willing to pay you too, because the only right to money your insurance has are the rights you would have had acting on your own.

Easy strategy to force neighbor's insurance to pay is to sue the neighbor in small claims court. That approach may be considerably easier than dickering with people in some call center.

Beck looks for new connection with 'Song Reader'

(AP) ? Beck Hansen wants you to think about the way music has changed over the last century and what that means about how human beings engage each other these days.

Laboring over the intricate and ornate details of his new "Song Reader" sheet music project, he was struck by how social music used to be ? something we've lost in the age of ear buds.

"You watch an old film and see how people would dance together in the '20s, '30s and '40s. You'd go out and people would switch partners and it was a way of social interaction," Hansen said. "It's something that was part of what brought people together. Playing music in the home is another aspect of that that's been lost. Again, I'm not on a campaign to get people to take up songs and play music in their home or anything. But it is interesting to me, the loss of that, what it means."

Beck hopes the "Song Reader" inspires some of us to pick up instruments and limber our vocal cords. It includes 20 songs annotated on sheet music that's been decorated in the style popular in the early 20th century when the songwriting industry was a thriving enterprise with billions of songs sold.

The 42-year-old singer notes in the book's preface that Bing Crosby's "Sweet Leilani" sold an estimated 54 million copies in 1937, meaning about 40 percent or more of the U.S. population was engaged in learning how to play that song. They were touching it directly, speeding it up, slowing it down, changing the lyrics and creating something new.

"There's popular bands now that people know the words to their songs and can sing along, but there's something about playing a song for yourself or for your friends and family that allows you to inhabit the song and by some sort of osmosis it becomes part of who you are in a way," he said. "So when I think of my great-grandparents' generations, music defined their lives in a different way than it does now."

Beck proposed the idea to McSweeney's Dave Eggers in 2004 and it soon blossomed into something more ambitious as the artist wrapped his mind around the challenge of not just writing a song, but presenting it in a classic way that also engages fans who might not be able to read music or play their own instruments.

They quickly agreed it would make no money, but it seemed like an idea worth exploring.

"And it seemed like only Beck would have thought of it," Eggers said in an email to the Associated Press. "It's a very generous project, in that he wrote a bunch of songs and just gives them to the world to interpret. That's a very expansive kind of generosity and inclusiveness that we're happy to be part of. On a formal level, we love projects like this, that are unprecedented, and that result in a beautiful object full of great art and great writing. And it all started with Beck. It's a testament to his groundbreaking approach to everything he does."

Beck hopes fans will record their own versions and upload them to the Internet so those songs grow into something more universal.

As for his own recorded music, that's a little more complicated.

Beck's not sure where he's headed at the moment. He recorded an album in 2008, but set it aside to work with Charlotte Gainsbourg on "IRM," which he wrote and produced. He's also been writing songs for soundtracks and special projects and producing artists like Thurston Moore, Stephen Malkmus and Dwight Yoakam. All that has left him feeling creatively satisfied, but he does acknowledge it's been a while since he released 2008's Danger Mouse-produced "Modern Guilt."

He says in many ways he's reached a crossroads he's not yet sure how to navigate.

"This last year I've been thinking about whether I'd finish those songs (from 2008), whether they're relevant or worthy of releasing. I know that doesn't sound very definitive," he said, laughing, "but that's the kind of place I'm in ? in this kind of limbo ? and, um, yeah."

The "Song Reader" spurred Beck to think about his own work in a new light as well. Spending six months finishing off the project after working on it sporadically over the years, he was struck by how much craft went into the creation of each song and how quickly music can come into existence today.

"There is so much music out there, to me," he said. "I don't know if it's just where I am in my own music making or if it's a product of the amount of music out there, but I feel like a piece of music does have to have a certain validity to be put out there and to ask people to listen. ... I feel like it's impossible for everyone to keep up, you know, so I guess I've been feeling like maybe there's something to picking what you're going to put out, about being more particular about what you put out."

Weekly US jobless aid applications drop to 343K

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell sharply for a fourth straight week, a sign that the job market may be improving.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell 29,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 343,000, the lowest in two months. It is the second-lowest total this year.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs, so the drop indicates that companies are cutting fewer jobs. But employers also need to step up hiring to rapidly push down the unemployment rate.

Applications spiked five weeks ago because of Superstorm Sandy. The storm's impact has now faded. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell 27,000 to 381,500. Before the storm, applications had fluctuated between 360,000 and 390,000 this year.

The storm had little effect on overall hiring in November. Employers added 146,000 jobs last month, the government said last week. That's about the same as the average monthly gain of 150,000 in the past year.

The unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent ? a four-year low ? from 7.9 percent in October. But the decline occurred mostly because more people without jobs gave up looking for work. The government counts people without jobs as unemployed only if they're actively seeking one.

The department also said Tuesday that employers posted the most open jobs in four months in October. That suggests that hiring could pick up a bit in the coming months.

But some companies may postpone hiring this month because of concerns over the "fiscal cliff," the package of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take effect next year. If all the changes in the cliff take effect for a full year, economists forecast it would push the economy into recession.

President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are negotiating a potential deficit-reduction deal that would avert the cliff. The goal is to complete an agreement by the end of the year, though talks could continue into January.

Most economists say that if the tax increases and spending cuts are in effect only temporarily while a budget agreement is in sight, the damage to the economy would be minor.

Questions swirl as Mandela remains hospitalized

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Where is Nelson Mandela?

As the 94-year-old patriarch of South Africa's democracy entered his seventh day of hospitalization Friday for a recurring lung infection, confusion grew as government officials appeared to contradict themselves over where he is being treated.

With the government refusing to say where Mandela is, concern grew across this nation of 50 million people about the health of the anti-apartheid icon.

Mandela, admitted Saturday to a hospital, was thought to have been at 1 Military Hospital near South Africa's capital, Pretoria, after Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said she visited the leader there Monday. But when local media reported that Mandela wasn't at that hospital Thursday night, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj declined to give the whereabouts of the ailing politician.

"President Mandela is being treated at a Pretoria hospital as said from the first statement we issued," Maharaj said. "We have refrained from disclosing the hospital in order to ensure privacy and also to allow doctors space to do their work of caring for (him) without interruptions or undue pressure."

It was not immediately clear if Mandela had been moved or if he had been at a different facility during his entire seven-day hospitalization, his longest since 2001, when he underwent radiation therapy after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

On Monday, addressing journalists after her visit, Mapisa-Nqakula said: "We confirm that former President Mandela is in (the) hospital, 1 Military Hospital, and he's doing very, very well."

Sonwabo Mbananga, a defense department spokesman, said Friday that "the minister is not going to clarify anything" about her remarks Monday and declined to comment further.

On Friday, journalists saw a convoy of presidential security cars and an ambulance leave a private Pretoria hospital and later arrive at 1 Military Hospital. However, it could not be immediately determined if the convoy had anything to do with Mandela's care.

Speaking to The Associated Press on Friday afternoon, Maharaj again declined to identify which hospital Mandela was staying at, saying officials are "trying to protect his privacy." When asked about the defense minister's comments, Maharaj said the presidency had been consistent in avoiding identifying the hospital and declined to comment further.

Mandela "has been comfortable the past 24 hours and continues to receive care," Maharaj said.

South Africa's government has said Mandela, initially admitted for medical tests, was being treated for a lung infection. Mandela has a history of lung problems, after falling ill with tuberculosis in 1988 toward the tail-end of his 27 years in prison before his release and being elected president. While doctors said at the time the disease caused no permanent damage to his lungs, medical experts say tuberculosis can cause problems years later for those infected.

Mandela had an acute respiratory infection in January 2011 and following the chaos surrounding Mandela's stay at a public hospital the South African military took charge of his care and the government took over control the information about his health.

All-seeing headset gives you 360-degree vision

EYES in the back of your head - you know you want them. And soon you may get your wish, simply by slipping on a headset that gives you a 360-degree field of vision.

Called FlyVIZ, the system was designed by J?r?me Ardouin and colleagues at the Grande ?cole d'Ingenieurs Paris-Laval in France. It captures images from every direction around the wearer, then transforms them into something our measly human vision system can comprehend.

The system is at prototype stage: at 1.6 kilograms, it's a bit heavy to walk around with, and remains connected to a laptop for image-processing while it runs. It uses a video camera, mounted atop a helmet, along with specially shaped mirrors to capture the environment on all sides of the user, then displays it in real time on a modified Sony Personal 3D Viewer headset.

The system takes about 15 minutes to get used to, its creators claim in a paper they presented at the Virtual Reality Software and Technology conference in Toronto, Canada, this week. Once acclimatised, the wearer is able to move around and interact fluidly with their environment.

In a series of trials, users grabbed sticks that would have been outside their normal field of view, dodged balls thrown from behind them, and even drove a car.

Despite the strange new perspective on the world, the device does not cause any nausea, motion sickness or visual fatigue, the team claims. And even though FlyVIZ acquires and displays images in 2D, wearers still had serviceable depth perception, which the researchers attribute to wearers intuitively tracking object motion and parallax in the image to compensate for a lack of normal binocular vision.

A streamlined version of the system could one day be useful for security guards, police, or fire fighters - or anyone with good reason to watch their backs.

NJ Gov. Christie: My weight no bar to presidency

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he is "more than a little" overweight ? but fit enough to be in the White House.

The Republican governor was asked about his weight problem during an interview with Barbara Walters for her "10 Most Fascinating People" special Wednesday night on ABC.

Walters told the governor some people say he is too heavy to be president one day.

"That's ridiculous," Christie responded. "I don't know what the basis for that is."

Walters said worries about his health were the reason for the concern. The governor then pointed to his widely praised handling of Superstorm Sandy, which has sent his popularity soaring.

"I've done this job pretty well, and I think people watched me for the last number of weeks and Hurricane Sandy doing 18-hour days and getting right back up the next day and still being just as effective in the job," he said. "So I don't really think that would be a problem."

Christie had considered a run for president in 2012. Last month, he announced that he would seek re-election as governor, saying he wanted to lead the state through its post-storm rebuilding and that the one year left in his first term wouldn't be enough to finish the job.

The governor has battled a weight problem for many years and often jokes about his struggles. At a news briefing last month, when asked about Twinkies maker Hostess shutting down, he went on a riff about not taking the bait. "This is a setup!" he jokingly exclaimed.

When Walters started the discussion by telling Christie he is a "little overweight," he responded: "More than a little."

Asked why, he answered: "If I could figure that out, I'd fix it."

The governor was also asked about his weight during an interview with Oprah Winfrey in January, and how he deals with people joking about him being fat. He said he had developed "a shell about it."

Putin says foreign meddling in Russian politics unacceptable

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The family of Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera said on Monday they are holding onto hope that she may still be alive, although U.S. officials said earlier that she died on Sunday in a plane crash in Mexico. "In our eyes, we still have faith that our sister will be OK," Rivera's brother Juan told reporters outside the family house near Long Beach, California. "We thank God for the life that he has given ... my sister," said Juan Rivera, also a singer. "For all the triumphs and successes she has had, and we expect that there will be more in the future. ...

? Deals are limited to inventory on hand. Your TrueCar Certified Dealer must confirm that actual inventory, including your preferred options and colors, is in stock.
? It doesn?t matter where you live, our weekly ?Steals on Wheels? deals are available nationwide and demonstrate potential savings on new cars based on the possible discount from the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). These steals may feature manufacturer?s rebates and cash incentives, or may also include special leasing offers, depending on what our data shows to be the greatest opportunities for savings for new car shoppers in the upcoming week. Keep in mind that incentives and leasing programs are subject to change by region and should be confirmed with your dealer, as they can affect your final price.
? We highlight the top discounts (this week, on trucks and SUVs for bringing home a tree) off the MSRP by the particular trim level, since potential discounts can vary greatly between the trim levels. So for this week, the 2WD Reg Cab 120.5" Tradesman trim level of the Ram 1500 pickup truck (for example), was the most highly discounted trim of the entire Ram lineup in relation to its MSRP, and was a high enough discount to make the top of our list.

TIP! Attach a personalized signature to your emails, with your name and a link to your site. This is the calling card for your business on the web, and you should distribute it at every opportunity.

Offering free gifts or promotions will make your customers feel valued. Internet promotion strategies sometimes forget things like giving free gifts to customers, but this pays huge dividends in the long run.

Make small changes to your headlines and your content on a regular basis, and pay close attention to how it affects traffic and sales. Continue employing the Internet promotion techniques that are successful but keep trying new methods to increase your business. Also, make sure that you listen to your customer?s reviews and opinions.

Be sure to give your campaign your personal touch. In advertisements, include your real name and post a photo of yourself on the website. You could also have a handwritten statement to welcome your visitors.

TIP! Press releases are effective Internet marketing tools. With a well-written press release, that offers clear and informative content, you can find multiple sources that will publish it and open it to niche markets.

Give your customers a reason to visit your website. If your website is a single page, only showing hours and an address, you will not see much traffic. Through adding content such as articles or reviews, you ensure your customers that you know your business and industry.

If your customers are aware of incentives or promotions that you offer, they will be more apt to order right away. Incentives can include free or upgraded shipping, or even gift wrapping. Be creative. As an example, you could offer the first 150 customers ordering a specific product the free shipping incentive. This is the perfect way to get potential customers to act today, rather than putting it off until tomorrow.

Making sure to include captions in your images is a great tip to employ. Search engines use captions to help determine if a site is relevant to a user?s search. With a well thought caption surrounding the picture, soon you?ll see your site generating a lot more traffic.

TIP! When you?re marketing online, you should remember that strategy is important in the way you promote your materials. AdSense by Google can help you to achieve this.

All your correspondence with anyone on your mailing list should be personalized. Many people are weary of getting endless impersonal email messages. Are you sick and tired of getting spam email all the time? Create something that?s personalized and targeted to stand out from other email senders.

Consider doing your own email marketing. It?s pretty easy to learn how to create mailing lists and use auto responders and mass mailers if you apply yourself. Plus, what you learn now will only help you more in the future.

It seems impressive when people see that you have profiles on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and a bunch of other social networking sites, but you need to keep adding information to make your profiles stay fresh. When you see a stagnant profile, it is seen as spam.

TIP! Make a page on some of the social networking sites. Be sure to take care when sending unwanted emails, as MySpace has been taking notice and have filed lawsuits against those they claim harass others.

Find a program that will help track the number of site visitors compared to the number of purchases made to find out if your marketing is working. The most successful sites use customizable applications that track site statistics like sales and traffic.

Anonymity is a part of doing business online. This tactic is especially successful for small or individually owned and operated businesses that rely on and can offer personal relationships in selling.

On the check-out page, add in specials so that your customer can see what else is for sale. You could give a choice of three different half-price items. You can really thin out your extra merchandise and boost your sales by doing this while simultaneously promoting goodwill from your customer who will feel he or she is getting a really great deal.

TIP! Comments are an excellent resource, even from non-buyers. Adding a form to fill at the bottom of ad copy will allow these visitors to explain why a purchase was not made.

A good website marketing strategy is to use image searching to your advantage. You can enhance your site by adding appropriate images, and this may attract additional customer exposure. People who are searching for other things might wind up at your site because they were searching for a particular image. Of course, if your site is interesting enough, you will win a repeat visitor.

We already have seen how Online marketing can be the way to reach out to new customers. It can also be used to communicate with your existing customers. It?s not all about promoting your site ruthlessly and through every single medium out there. It?s also about communication. By incorporating the tactics in the article you just read, you can become really successful in the land of Website marketing.

GE uses dual piezo jets to keep a Core i7 laptop cool, play a merry tune (hands-on video)

GE Global Research creates prototype fanless Core i7 laptop, dual piezo jets keep things cool handson

Cooling fans are the bane of many a laptop user's existence. The tiny things are often over-taxed right out of the box and, after a year or two worth of dust and detritus gets in them, they complain more and more loudly. As much as we hate them, engineers hate them more, as they take up precious space beneath the keyboard and draw precious juice from the battery. GE has a better solution, so-called dual piezo cooling jets. They're just 1mm thick, could consume a fraction of the power of a fan and contain no moving parts -- at least, not in the traditional sense. As a demo of their potential, GE created a prototype Core i7-powered laptop, cooled only by these jets. Click on through for our impressions.

(AP) ? Shoppers at an Ikea store in Toronto weren't monkeying around when they reported a primate on the loose.

Customers spotted a monkey ? clad in a pint-sized shearling coat ? wandering around the store's parking lot Sunday afternoon. The baby monkey, named Darwin, made its way through rows of parked cars and ended up outside a set of store doors.

Ikea staff lured the primate into a corner before calling police, who contacted the city's Animal Services department, said Staff Sgt. Ed Dzingala.

"It was just outside the store, just in a corner area where the monkey had nowhere to go, but it was pretty scared," Dzingala said. He said the monkey had escaped its crate in a parked car.

The monkey, which reportedly wore a diaper as well, never made it inside the store and was picked up by Animal Services officers within half an hour. The animal's owner later contacted police and was reunited with the pet, Dzingala said.

Word of the incident sparked a flurry of comments and photos on Twitter, as well as two parody Twitter accounts which took on the persona of the wandering monkey.

Mary Lou Leiher from Toronto Animal Services said the monkey's owners have been fined $240 for breaking the city's prohibited-animal bylaw. She said Darwin was being fed and cared for while officials tried to find an animal sanctuary for it.

Leiher said there's a chance the monkey is carrying Herpes B and that having it live in a city puts both the animal and human beings at risk.

She said the monkey was very quiet and lacked signs of personality during a brief visit, adding that can be a sign of stress.

Email marketing and newsletters

Keeping it Personal

Email marketing is reported to be the second most effective online marketing strategy, second only to search engine marketing (SEO). Why is this so? For the simple reason that (almost) everybody who participates online has an email address. Before your website or other social media accounts, it?s your first home. It?s how you get found. It sure isn?t called an ?address? if not for this, right?

It is for this reason that email marketing is so potent. It directly sends your company or business? message to your current or potential customers ? right to their ?doorstep? so to speak.

If you haven?t noticed, since the dawn of the internet age, email marketing has cost-effectively replaced the traditional practice of sending promotional materials through snail mail. This has helped business owners save a lot of advertising cost.

email marketing Email Marketing Is Dead Isnt It?

Moreover, email marketing campaigns are easier to personalize to serve your various business needs.

  • Are you slashing prices off your products?
  • Let your loyal customers know by emailing them.
  • Are you launching a new promo?
  • Send your potential customers emails and turn them into loyal patrons.
  • These are only a few of the many ways email marketing can serve your business.

Just to help you get the bigger picture, the objectives of email marketing can be summarized as follows:

  1. To promote a particular product or service.
  2. To retain or attract loyalty from current customers by sending monthly or bi-monthly newsletters. This keeps them updated and interested about your business. First you must generate leads though.
  3. To be used as an affiliate marketing strategy. Some businesses, instead of sending their own newsletters, partner with other businesses to announce or carry-out their campaign.

You may be wondering how to do this?

  • Cold List

Email marketing can be carried-out through your cold list database or your current customer database (information you gathered from various means i.e., opt-in or permission marketing, or those who signed-up and subscribed to receive your email updates either through your website or other means).

  • Email Marketing Platforms

As the online world is ever innovative in its ways, email marketing is not as tedious as it was eons ago. Software programs and other customized platforms are now being offered to make email marketing more targeted and effective. We recommend MailChimp

  • Email Design

The design of your email can be customized depending on the theme and concept of your campaign.

  • Tracking

You can also track the effectiveness of your campaign through different analytics programs. These services are usually offered as a package. But I highly recommend that you know the stats on your email campaigns. You need to know what is working, and what is not working.

Mobile gadget users are ever growing.

So, like all the other online marketing strategies, it is best to consider your mobile users when you plan your email marketing campaign.

  • Are your emails and newsletters viewable on cellphones and tablets?
  • Do they load as fast as they do in laptops and PCs?
  • Be sure to address and specify these concerns to whichever marketing company or outfit you will hire to help you with your email campaign.

If you search online, you might stumble upon forums and articles claiming email marketing is dead. But basic logic will tell you this is not the case and will never be so.

The reason is simple:?Email Marketing is very Affordable and Effective, both for businesses and customers, respectively. And more than anything else, email marketing is, suffice it to say, the personal touch that businesses communicate with their customers.

As humans, even in the cold wide world of the world wide web, always prefer to get that personal touch. Don?t you?

Leave me a comment, and tell me why you think email marketing is dead.
