Cat videos get their moment at Minn. film festival

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Warning: This is a story about online cat videos. If you're among the seemingly tiny minority of the general population not interested in watching a 1-minute clip of a cat in a T-shirt pounding on a keyboard, then move along.

For everyone else, a new measure of respectability is looming for an Internet pleasure that is both massively popular and, for some people, a bit embarrassing. The Walker Art Center, a well-regarded museum of modern art in Minneapolis, on Thursday is presenting its first "Internet Cat Video Film Festival" to showcase the best in filmed feline hijinks.

With about 70 videos over 60 minutes, the Walker is mounting a social experiment as much as a film festival. At issue is whether cat video lovers used to gorging on the clips in the privacy of their homes will do so in public ? an online community of fellow aficionados interacting face to face for the first time.

"It is a cultural phenomenon that raises some interesting questions," said Katie Hill, the Walker program associate who first suggested the festival.

But Hill, a self-described "art historian and cat lady," was quick to add: "I'm not a behavioral psychologist, I'm not a sociologist. I just think they're funny and cute, and I think a lot of other people do too."

The numbers bear it out. Some of the classics of the form have racked up tens of millions of YouTube page views. The aforementioned "Keyboard Cat" posted 26.3 million page views since it was posted in 2007. A 30-second clip titled "Very Angry Cat" ? can you guess the plot? ? has 78.5 million page views since 2006.

"Some you just watch over and over and over again," said Angie Bailey, a cat blogger and owner from Chisago City, Minn., covering the film festival for the website Catster.com. "When you want to laugh and feel good it's sort of an escape from what happens in the real world."

Walker programmers got about 10,000 submissions for the festival after initially expecting several hundred. They whittled that down to the 70 videos to be shown on an outdoor screen on the museum's grounds.

Afterward, festivalgoers will be able to vote online for a "Best in Show" award. In addition, the Walker programmers picked a "Golden Kitty Award" to be bestowed at the end of the night.

"The Walker has advised, if you bring your cat put it on a leash," said Josh Feist, a Minneapolis arts administrator who planned to take his cat, Pickles, to the show. "It could be potentially crazy if there are hundreds of people who bring their cats. It will be interesting to see what develops."

    Get the video cameras ready.

Samsung strikes new Note after Apple suit

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co unveils the second generation of its popular Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet at Europe's biggest electronics show in Berlin later on Wednesday, as the South Korean firm comes under pressure to innovate after losing a U.S. patent battle with Apple Inc.

A U.S. federal jury last week found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.

The Galaxy Note phablet, Samsung's second most popular smartphone after its flagship Galaxy S, is not included in the list of the potential U.S. sales ban, and Samsung hopes the phablet upgrade will lift any post-Apple gloom at the South Korean group.

"There won't be huge innovative changes in design, but the Note 2 will feature quite a few improvements and enable Samsung to carry on its strong sales momentum in the category," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities. "With the launch, Samsung will also be trying to turn around downbeat sentiment after the U.S. legal defeat."

The new version of the Note is expected to feature a thinner and slightly bigger 5.5-inch screen, powerful quad-core processor, the latest version of Google's Android operating system called Jellybean, and improved stylus function.

It's the latest product to illustrate Samsung's attempts to make bold design changes as it comes increasingly under pressure to differentiate its line-up from the iPhone, whose simple and large touchscreen-based design revolutionized the mobile industry and is still considered the gold standard of design.

    FLEXI-SCREEN

Samsung is also working to introduce smartphones with bendable screens later this year as it seeks to cement its lead in the $200 billion plus global smartphone market and challenge Apple, which is expected to launch its new iPhone on September 12.

The new Note comes just three months after Samsung released the third generation of its Galaxy S smartphone, which has already sold more than 10 million, and succeeds the original 5.3-inch Note, which was introduced in late-October and was a surprise hit, selling more than 10 million within 9 months.

Other firms that offer so-called phablets include LG Electronics and HTC. ABI Research has predicted phablet shipments could reach 208 million by 2015.

Unlike Apple, Samsung depends on various line-ups, offering a range of models in different sizes and with different software, and keeps its product cycle shorter. Later this year, it is expected to launch a new model running Microsoft's upgraded Windows operating system.

Samsung shares rose 2.9 percent to 1.23 million won in Seoul on Wednesday - in a broader Korean market that closed up 0.6 percent - and are now down just 3.5 percent from their levels before last Friday's U.S. ruling. The shares slumped 7.5 percent on Monday, wiping $12 billion off the company's market value.

A U.S. judge on Tuesday set a December 6 court date to hear Apple's request for a permanent injunction against Samsung smartphones, which could delay the potential impact of Apple's legal victory. Also, ratings agency Standard & Poor's said Apple's bruising legal win had not affected the agency's ratings on Samsung. (Reporting by Miyoung Kim; Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

As gamers flock to 'Guild Wars 2,' some get the boot

    12 hrs.

The highly anticipated online fantasy game "Guild Wars 2" officially opened its doors today and already hundreds of thousands of players have flocked to the game.

Not surprisingly, gamers?and the game's developers at AreneaNet have hit a few bumps along the way?as hordes of players?have tried to sign in?to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game.?

Some players are?reporting problems connecting to the game while others are having issues creating characters in?the game, which takes place in the virtual, magic-filled?world of Tyria.?Meanwhile the developers at ArenaNet say they've already?had to suspend some "Guild Wars 2"?players for offensive and hateful behavior.

As they launched the game Tuesday,?ArenaNet officials announced that one million people?had already?played "Guild Wars 2" from Saturday through Monday?during a?three-day headstart program that launched over the weekend. Those who pre-ordered "Guild Wars 2"?were allowed to start on?Saturday. And ArenaNet reps say?that,?at one point,? 400,000 people were playing the game at one time.?

In fact, one French player?managed to get his character to the game's top level (level 80) in a record-breaking 32 hours of playtime.

But some players?on Tuesday reported having trouble logging into the game.?The official @GuildWars2 Twitter account acknowledged the issues?tweeting: "We're aware of the login issues and are working on them???thanks for your patience!"

ArenaNet also assured European?players that they are aware of connectivity issues there and tweeted, "We are currently pushing updates to fix bugs or issues that are affecting gameplay." And in the afternoon they?added, "For those of you having problems with lag or character creation, we're looking into it. Thanks for letting us know!"??

Meanwhile,?players have reported issues with the "Guild Wars 2" overflow server system, which is?designed to allow people?to keep playing when their own server is overloaded. And the "Guild Wars 2" Trading Post ?-- a system that allows players to trade items between?each other -- is offline.

    ArenaNet issued the following explanation:

We currently have a couple serious bugs with one of our important back end systems. This error is causing the loss of trading post, players to sometimes be separated and unable to travel to each other when switching maps and entering overflow servers, and numerous guild errors. We are very sorry for this inconvenience and are currently working around the clock to try and remedy this error.

When this bug is fixed overflow servers will keep parties together and players will be able to travel to the same overflow server as any friend or guild member who is in an overflow.

Also offline: The official "Guild Wars 2" forums. When asked about it,?ArenaNet tweeted that, "at present our main focus is getting players in game."

With hundreds of thousands of players trying to jump into?a brand new online?game, these kinds of issues?are not out of the ordinary. When "Diablo 3" arrived?earlier this year, Blizzard ended up?apologizing to the many?gamers?who?encountered?servers so?overwhelmed by the launch-day crush the game was unplayable. And when BioWare launched "Star Wars: The Old Republic" servers quickly became over?crowded?and?many?players found themselves stuck in waiting rooms.

But the kinks and bugs associated with a new online game aren't the only issues facing the?"Guild Wars 2" creators and players.

Some players have found themselves suspended from the game for giving their characters offensive names and for using offensive and racist language while chatting in the game. It has become such a hotly discussed topic, the folks at ArenaNet took to Reddit to explain why they have?banned players?and to?offer examples of exactly the kind of names and language that can't be used.

    They wrote:

To keep Guild Wars 2 a pleasant place to be, we take action against racist names, hate speech, and other unacceptable behavior. We have suspended some accounts involved in the use of offensive character names or inappropriate chat. The number of account blocks is miniscule: less than .001% of our total player base.

When an account is blocked for a chat offense, the account is given a three-day suspension. When an account is blocked for an offensive name, the player is required to rename the character name and, in most cases, the account is also given a three-day suspension.

In the lively Reddit discussion, ArenaNet went through some of the names and comments that earned a ban. Most are not appropriate for me to print here, but,?for example,?ArneaNet officials explained?it's not ok to say the following:

    • "Oh I am gonna break dance on your anal intercorse" (sic)
    • "shut the f(bleep) up with non-english, geez"
    • "the worm IS f(bleep)ing hard if you're a f(bleep)ing mentalpatient no we f(bleep)ing dont you can take a keep with 5 people if you're not a f(bleep)ing?(bleep)head"

Also, ArenaNet officials advise, "Save yourself a possible headache and avoid real-world and celebrity names." And no, you can not use the names?"Stop It Daddy Ahhhh" or "Adolf Critler."?In case you were wondering.

Though the game has now launched, the folks at ArenaNet say their work has only just begun.

As Mike O'Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet, said in a statement: "Now our focus is shifting to building on this living world we've delivered, continuously refining our game and improving services to ensure our players have the best possible experience."?

Winda Benedetti?writes?about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

OPI Gel Nail Polish: No Longer the Best Polish For Your Fingers

While you might be thinking that the best polish available on the market is OPI gel nail polish, you'd be wrong. In fact, you will be surprised to find that there is a whole line of colors that can surpass the quality and beauty of nails that have been painted with OPI. More and more women are discovering this new polish and finding that they stand out more and their polish stays on longer than with any other brand on the market.

OPI gel nail polish has been regarded as one of the most popular and best nail polish makers on the market for years now. Their wide selection of colors has been available in drugstores throughout the country for quite some time. However, your nails deserve more than just drugstore quality polish, you want something that is going to last you for more than a day or two after you polish your nails. Every woman wants their polish to look as freshly painted on the third day, just as they were on the first, and unfortunately there aren't many polishes that can do this for you.

Although OPI gel nail polish is a step above other polishes that you might pick out at the local drugstore, it certainly is not going to give you the same glamorous look of a new manicure that other gel polishes will though. Every woman wants a color that shimmers but without the gloppy look that other polishes give. Not to mention, you want to have access to every color that you can imagine, whether you want to match the season, the event you are attending or merely just the way you feel. Not all drugstore brands will sell a wide array of colors, you are typically limited to about a dozen colors, all of which might be various shades of pink that you already have.

The application process for your nail polish is also important, as you want your polish, whether nail polish OPI or not, to go on smoothly, yet dry so that they feel lightweight. If you can't make it to the salon every week, you want an affordable and quality alternative, right? Unfortunately, OPI gel nail polish can't provide you with that same quality that a salon would provide, you want something that professional salon specialists would use themselves.

If you are searching for something better than OPI gel nail polish, then you can certainly have it with quality, salon style polish. Don't feel limited by the best nail polish around that your drugstore claims to offer, venture out and see what your nails have been screaming for.

Nail polish is a standard part of many people's daily fashion habits. Another thing that is used to enhance the beauty of your nails is OPI gel nail polish. To check out some of the nail tips, you can simply browse www.nailuvpolish.com.

    R and R (Romney and Ryan)'s Vision for America - Resurrecting ...

    ????????Robert A. Levine??? August 27, 2012

When I was in the Army in Vietnam during the war, we used to look forward to R and R, a period of BobLevineRest and Relaxation, either in or out of the country. R and R now, Romney and Ryan, will provide anything but rest and relaxation for the next three months until the election, as they explain their plans for the nation?s future.

By choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate, Romney has acknowledged his embrace of Ryan?s economic vision, which encompasses cutting most federal programs aside from defense. Ryan is a disciple of Jack Kemp and supply-side economics. This contends that lower marginal tax rates and capital gains taxes will increase supplies (products) for consumers and grow the economy to a point where tax revenues are the same as when higher rates were in effect. Most main-stream economists believe this theory is fallacious but Ryan remains one of its proponents, which is obviously beneficial to high income earners. (America?s economy has actually grown most vigorously during the periods when taxes have been high.)

Older Americans have the most to lose with Ryan?s economic plans. Though he voted in the past to expand Medicare with an unaffordable prescription drug plan that increased the national debt by hundreds of billions of dollars, he now wants to make Medicare into a voucher program with direct payment to seniors for premium support. Seniors would be given money by the federal government to choose private companies for their medical insurance. Ryan expects this to cut 220px-Paul_Ryan_official_portraithealth care spending by competition among insurance companies, and by giving people incentives to choose less expensive care because they will have to bear some of the costs. This is basically what many non-Medicare patients with private insurance have now and it hasn?t worked to lower costs. What the Ryan plan actually does is shift medical costs from the government to older patients, many of whom will not be able to afford expensive care. The plan would not take effect for a decade and seniors could still choose to stay in Medicare, but with reduced benefits.

Partial privatization of Social Security is another of Ryan?s ideas to lower the national debt. People would be able to invest a portion of their Social Security accounts in stock or bond funds or other options to try and increase yield and raise the amount of money they would receive after retirement. However, most people have been shown to lack enough sophistication to handle their own investments and it is likely that their returns would be disappointing. This is particularly true during periods when interest yields are low, as is the case currently. While privatization of Social Security might result in more money for investment managers, it does not mean that greater payouts would be available for Social Security recipients.

Ryan would also like to cut costs by having direct Medicaid block grants to the states, reduced federal spending on infrastructure, education and research, decreasing the food-stamp program and Head Start, and cutting spending on alternative energy programs. By all of these measures, he says corporate and individual tax rates could be lowered while the budget deficits and the national debt could be curtailed. But there would be no government investments for the future, depending entirely on the private sector to meet the nation?s needs.

The conservative R and R vision for America would demolish the safety nets that have been established for seniors, the unemployed and poor people and change the way government functions. There are those among us who for one reason or another cannot fully care for themselves. The R and R vision eliminates compassion from the government, expecting every individual to be fully responsible for the choices they make and the ensuing outcomes. It will be very good for the rich, but hurt the middle class and be tragic for the poor.

Though government certainly needs to be reorganized and spending cut significantly, it must be done with proper concern for the needs of the middle class and the poor. And it is only fair to increase the taxes of higher income earners to help reduce the budget deficits and national debt.

    Brother HL-6180DW

Although you wouldn't guess it from the model number, the Brother HL-6180DW is best understood as a heavier-duty version of the Editors' Choice Brother HL-5450DN that I recently reviewed. It adds Wi-Fi and a few other features, but it's built around the same engine and offers essentially the same speed and output quality. The key differences are a larger paper capacity and a lower cost per page. That's enough to put the HL-6180DW in a different category than the Brother HL-5450DN, where it also qualifies as Editors' Choice.

Directly competitive with the more expensive Editors' Choice OKI B431dn , the HL-6180DW delivers a slightly slower speed but a higher paper capacity. Both printers are aimed primarily at micro and small offices, and both can serve as heavy-duty personal printers. However, the Brother printer's larger paper capacity and larger size make it a little harder to justify for personal, rather than shared, use.

    Basics
The HL-6180DW's paper handling is more than adequate for most micro and small offices, with a duplexer (for printing on both sides of a page) and a 550-sheet capacity, divided into a 500-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. For those offices that need more, an optional second 500-sheet drawer ($209.99 list) boosts the capacity to 1,050 sheets. If you need the higher capacity, however, you're better off getting the Brother HL-6180DWT ($400 street), which is the same printer with the second tray already included.

As you might expect from the high paper capacity, the HL-6180DW is big enough so you might not want it sitting on your desk. With the standard capacity, it measures 11.3 by 14.6 by 15.1 inches (HWD). That gives it a smaller footprint than many inkjets, but the height and boxy shape makes it feel more imposing. Add the second tray and the height goes up to 16.5 inches. Even with both trays, however, it's small enough to keep near your desk, if not on it.

    Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
Setting up the HL-6180DW for printing over a network is typical for the breed, although it's worth noting that the printer also offers support for a variety of mobile printing options, including AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and Brother's own mobile app. For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system.

    Brother HL-6180DW

Brother rates the HL-6180DW at 42 pages per minute (ppm), or 2 ppm faster than the HL-5450DN. However, on our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), the HL-6180DW was statistically tied with the HL-5450DN, at 10.7 ppm. Both were a tad slower than the B431dn, at 11.1 ppm.

Output quality for the printer is par overall, and a close match to both the HL-5450DN and the B431. Text quality is at the low end of the range where the vast majority of mono lasers fall, making it easily good enough for any business need short of serious desktop publishing applications.

Graphics output is at the high end of par for mono lasers, which also makes it good enough for any internal business need. Whether you consider it good enough for, say, PowerPoint handouts will depend largely on how critical an eye you have. Photos are also par, which makes them easily good enough for printing Web pages with photos. Here again, whether you consider them good enough for photos in a client or company newsletter or the like will depend on your level of perfectionism.

    Other Issues
The HL-6180DW offers a low running cost. The claimed per page cost of 1.8 cents is the same that OKI claims for the B431dn, and 0.4 cents less than Brother claims for the HL-5450DN. Print 25,000 pages over the lifetime of the printer, in short, and you can make up the difference in initial price between the HL-5450DN and the HL-6180DW. Print more, and the HL-6180DW will be less expensive in the long run.

Clearly, if you need a smaller printer that will fit more comfortably on your desk, or your needs run more toward light- to medium-duty printing (so you won't benefit from a lower cost per page or higher paper capacity), you should be looking at the HL-5450DN. For heavier-duty printing, however, the Brother HL-6180DW easily beats the HL-5450DN on running cost and paper handling, while it matches or beats the B431dn on initial cost, running cost, and paper capacity. All of this makes it a runaway pick for Editors' Choice.

Breezies Bras Product Review - Shopping Tips - CouponSnapshot ...

August 26, 2012 by Deal Pro

Finding the right bra can be overwhelming. Most of us don?t even know what our correct size is. Once you?ve measured and then measured again, what do you do? There are literally thousands of different brands and dozens of styles to choose from.

One of the best bras currently on the market is made by a brand called Breezies. They are offered on QVC.com, as well as Amazon.com.

Breezies bras come in all styles and sizes, even those hard to find E cups and higher. The styles are amazing, and functional as well as pretty. Chances are, they have what you are looking for.

Barely Breezies Molded Seamless BraBellina bra

The most popular Breezies bra is their Barely Breezies Molded Seamless Bra with their revolutionary UltimAir technology. What UltimAir does is keeps your body cooler via the patented fabrics that keep moisture away from the body. This bra is molded, but is not a push-up bra, and it gives some women a much more defined shape. This is a great bra for those who would like a little extra ?oomph? with no seams to show under t-shirts. It comes in sizes up to 44D and in multiple colors.

    Bellina bra

The Bellina bra is also another favorite, and with good reasons. Not only does the padded underwire give you a comfortable fit, the design is simple and beautiful with its lacy exterior. Many women who have had breast reduction surgery like this bra because the underwire does not irritate their surgical scars, which is a big complaint about many other lingerie manufacturers? products.

Breezies Seamless Lace Front Closure bra

The Breezies Seamless Lace Front Closure bra is another bestselling item in the line. It also features UltimAir and is a very pretty bra. The lace is delicate enough that it does not show under thin tops and the front closure not only gives a great d?colletage, but it is also helpful to women with mobility issues. This bra features a racer back which is essential with some tank tops and sleeveless shirts. This one comes in sizes up to 48DD and is available in six different colors.

    Safari Lace Seamless bra

The Safari Lace Seamless bra is also a fan favorite and big seller. The lace overlay is delicate and seamless, which makes this bra beautiful and functional. Women love the colors and the fabric as well as the addition of UltimAir. It is also available at a clearance price right now on QVC.com.

Breezies also has great panty designs and smoothing briefs and shapers. The Curve and Contour High Waisted Boy Short is giving Spanx a run for its money! Check out their tights and camisoles also.

If you have the QVC Channel, the next Breezies showcase will air live on September 5, 2012. Check your local listing for show times.

Car runs down NH memorial ride cyclists, killing 2

WESTMORELAND, N.H. (AP) ? Police say an 87-year-old driver crossed the center lane of traffic and struck a bevy of motorcyclists participating in a New Hampshire memorial ride, killing two of them. Six other people were hurt.

Police say as many as 200 motorcycles were riding on Route 12 on Saturday morning in Westmoreland when a car driven by Walpole resident Robert Lockerby swerved into their lane.

Killed were 59-year-old Gary Champney, of Alstead, and 41-year-old Aaron Robar, of Newport. Five other motorcyclists and Lockerby's 87-year-old wife were hurt. Two were airlifted to hospitals.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

The ride was in honor of Army Spc. Justin Rollins, a Newport native who was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb in March 2007.
