(AP) ? NASA's most ambitious and expensive Mars mission begins this weekend with the arrival of the smartest rover ever built.

Like an Olympic gymnast, the rover must "stick the landing."

It won't be easy. The touchdown for the rover called Curiosity is so risky it's been described as "seven minutes of terror." That's the time it takes to slow down from a blazing 13,000 mph to a complete stop with the help of a parachute, heat shield and rockets.

In a new twist, the rover will be lowered by cables from a hovering spacecraft.

Scientists on Earth won't know for 14 minutes whether Curiosity safely landed Sunday night.

If all goes well, Curiosity will spend two years trying to figure out if the Mars environment was once suitable for microbes.

BELLE OF THE BAR

The Americans dominated the afternoon qualifying for women's gymnastics, but Britain's athletes got the loudest cheers.

An ovation greeted Britain's Beth Tweddle, who earned a 16.133 on the uneven bars for the top score of the session.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

US women dominate gymnastics, Wieber falls short

The Americans finished 11 points ahead during the preliminary rounds of women's gymnastics. But world champion Jordyn Wieber was knocked out of the all-around finals by teammate Aly Raisman.

Except for world champion?Jordyn?Wieber.

The U.S. women breezed through qualifying Sunday, throwing down a challenge to Russia, Romania and defending Olympic champion China. Wieber, however, will miss out on the all-around final after finishing behind Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. Countries are limited to two gymnasts in the all-around and event finals

The Americans finished with 181.863 points, more than 11 ahead of second-place Britain. That, despite?Wieber, Douglas and Kyla Ross bouncing out of bounds on floor exercise, their last event.

The team final is Tuesday, and the scoring starts from scratch.

The Americans have entered the last two Olympics as world champions, only to leave without a gold medal. But this team is stronger, top to bottom, than the 2004 and even 2008 squads, and it has a swagger LeBron and his buddies would appreciate. They know they're good ? routing Russia by four points at last year's worlds ? and they don't much worry about anyone else.

The setup worked in their favor, too, with the Americans starting on vault, their strongest event.

All four of the Americans do Amanars, one of the toughest vaults in the world ? a roundoff onto the takeoff board, back handspring onto the table and 2.5 twisting somersaults before landing. It's got a start value ? the measure of difficulty ? of 6.5, a whopping 0.7 above the vault most other gymnasts will do, and it gives the USA a massive advantage after just one event.

Even worse for rivals, the Americans make those vaults look easy. Gabby Douglas' toes were so pointed in the air she looked like a directional arrow while McKayla Maroney's legs were ruler straight. Each American took a hop on their landing, but it was a minor deduction and the U.S. left the event with a score of 47.633.

They held their own on uneven bars thanks to Douglas and Ross, who missed last year's world championships because she was too young and now flits between bars like a hummingbird, weightless and graceful. Douglas, dubbed "The Flying Squirrel" by national team coordinator Martha Karolyi because of her release moves, wowed the crowd by flipping so high above the bar she could have changed the overhead lights.

Her feet slammed into the mat on her dismount, and delighted coach Liang Chow sprinted around the end of the podium, pumping his fist.

Douglas scored a 15.333, and the Americans were cruising.

But?Wieber?was already showing signs of trouble. The U.S. champion came in as the heavy favorite for gold, having lost only two all-around competitions since 2008 ? both to U.S. teammates. But she lost to Douglas at the Olympic trials earlier this month, and wasn't her normal rock-solid self.

She had a form break on a handstand on uneven bars, and a few wobbles on balance beam. After Ross and Douglas flew out of bounds on floor exercise,?Wieber?got way too much power on one of her tumbling passes and had to take a step back to steady herself. Only problem: It was out of bounds, and the deduction all but ended any chance she had of staying in the top two.

B.J. Penn, Invicta FC and Rousimar Palhares: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.28.12

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garning all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6!? Wahoo!).? But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs,?and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it?in one place for you to read.? You're welcome.

  • B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald have signed up for the more stringent Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing ahead of their UFC 152 meeting.? Remember: athletic commissions already screen fighters for banned substances, so what Penn and MacDonald?are doing goes above and beyond what's required.? Bravo, guys.

Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural.? On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.

?

  • The Invicta Fighting Championships weigh-ins were last night, and?everything is?a?"go" for the all-female MMA card tonight?(broadcast for free on their site).? If you tune in, keep an eye on the main event, which features veteran submission specialist Shayna Baszler (who trains under Josh Barnett and once won a bout with a Twister, which is cool beans) taking on undefeated rising star Sara McMann (who won the Silver Medal in Freestyle wrestling in the 2004 Summer Olympics).? Because of her credentials, comparisons have been made between McMann and Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey - who took the Bronze Medal in judo in the 2008 Summer Olympics - but I say McMann needs a bit more seasoning.? Watch and judge for yourself, though.? I mean, who the heck am I?

?

  • Rousimar Palhares, a.k.a. "Toquinho", a.k.a. "that crazy guy who tears off legs and?will someday go?bonkers in the Octagon and have a psychotic break", won't require surgery for that knee injury that forced him out of his UFC 150 bout against Yushin Okami.? Tatame was kind enough to write something in English about it, so props to them.?

?

That's it for now.? If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see.? Follow or don't.? It doesn't matter to me.? I'm used to talking to myself.

The second-largest teachers union in the country is taking a stand against high-stakes standardized tests. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

DETROIT (AP) ? The nation?s second-largest teachers union has taken a stand against high-stakes testing, passing a resolution at its annual convention in Detroit that says the focus on standardized tests has undermined the United States? education system.

The American Federation of Teachers approved the resolution unanimously Saturday on the second day of its convention at Cobo Center. It said testing should be used to inform and not to impede classroom instruction.

?A lot of so-called reformers try to dictate top-down, standardized test-driven strategies that are heavy on competition and short on evidence and resources,? AFT President Randi Weingarten told the 2,400 delegates in her opening address. ?They don?t work.?

?What does work is to rely on the professional judgment of millions of educators who have devoted their lives to educating America?s children in our public schools,? she added.

Instead of basing teacher evaluations on the results of standardized tests, schools use multiple measures to assess teacher performance and focus on helping them improve throughout their careers, Weingarten said. She touted such a system worked out by administrators and teachers in the schools in New Haven, Conn.

?It?s a far cry from the shaming and sanctioning of teachers based on a single test score,? she said Friday.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, a teacher, were to address the convention Sunday afternoon.

The Bidens ?believe that providing a high-quality education for all children is critical to America?s economic future,? Biden?s office said before the address.

The nation?s largest teachers union is the 3.2 million-member National Education Association. AFT is second with 1.5 million teachers.

United Auto Workers President Bob King spoke to the group Saturday, criticizing right-wing politics that he said have reduced funding for schools, cut support services and let class sizes grow, the Detroit Free Press reported.

?And then they turn around and they try to vilify teachers for not doing a great job in educating our kids,? King said.

In her remarks, Weingarten predicted that two years from now, the union would look back on 2012 as a time ?of existential threat? that it was able to transform into ?a time of renewed respect.?

3 Olympic security staff arrested in Newcastle

(AP) ? British officials say three people due to work as Olympic venue security staff in Newcastle have been arrested on suspicion of immigration offenses.

Newcastle City Council earlier this week replaced G4S ? the company providing security at its Olympic stadium ? with local firms amid concerns over the company's staffing shortfalls.

Council press officer Nigel Whitefield confirmed Friday that three people who had been hired to work at Newcastle stadium were arrested by police working with U.K. border agents.

Northumbria Police said the arrests were over suspected immigration offenses, which could mean anything from overstaying a visa to working illegally.

The U.K. Home Office confirmed the arrests and said two of the individuals remain in custody.

Olympic soccer games are being held at Newcastle.

Drive to cheaper life insurance | Bankrate.com

A new study that finds that bad drivers live shorter lives than good ones may have a bigger impact on your life insurance than your car insurance.

Authors of?the new report by LexisNexis and RGA Reinsurance called "The Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Mortality Study" happened upon this interesting finding by extracting lifestyle data from more than 7.4 million randomly-chosen MVR records from all 50 states.

While insurance companies typically use MVR records to set your car insurance rates, it turns out these boring old records actually provide insights into the lifestyles of motorists that can help life insurance actuaries and underwriters build better policies. Who knew?

For example, the researchers found that motorists with major violations such as excessive speeding or alcohol-related infractions have mortality rates that are 70 percent higher from all causes than those whose records?steer clear of these potholes. Those with six or more violations on their MVR bump their mortality rate to 80 percent above those without.

The findings were consistent regardless of age or gender. However, while women are generally less prone than men to have major violations on their record, those who do increase their mortality rate by 100 percent over those who don't. Men, by contrast, only bump their mortality by 61 percent over those without major violations.

How might these lifestyle data extractions affect your life insurance?

"By examining the severity and number of violations on an applicant's MVRs, a life insurer can make more accurate pricing decisions, improve risk posture and improve underwriting efficiency," says Elliott Wallace of LexisNexis. "For consumers, this study offers insight into how lifestyle impacts risk and the considerations they need to make for life insurance."

Loosely translated, if you want affordable life insurance, keep your driving record clean. Life insurers that may never have given a second glance at your motor vehicle record will do so now.

Short Madonna concert gets boos from Paris crowd

PARIS (AP) ? A small Madonna concert that the pop star said was intended to celebrate France's tolerance instead tested it, drawing boos and cries of "refund!" when she left the stage after just 45 minutes.

The show Thursday, billed as an intimate event at Paris' noted Olympia club, was streamed live on YouTube. By Friday morning, the channel that showed the event disabled comments and had more than 12,000 dislikes compared with 10,000 likes.

An invitation to tweet about the show appeared to back fire ? audience members used the suggested hashtag (hash)MDNAParis to complain. The rebroadcast of the show cuts off when Madonna leaves the stage, apparently before the crowd realized the concert was over.

Madonna's press agent, Liz Rosenberg, said in a statement that the star's occasional club shows in the past "were never more than 45 minutes."

The show was "planned as a heartfelt thank you to France which she expressed at the start of the show," the statement said, and the performance at Olympia, a venue for top French artists, "was her way to honor her love for French artists, French cinema and a tribute to France's long history of welcoming and inspiring artists, authors, painters, poets and minorities from other countries over the years."

The show cost Madonna nearly $1 million to produce, the statement said, and keeping the prices at $100 involved a "tremendous effort."

The show was announced after France's far-right National Front threatened to sue Madonna after the singer showed a video at a Bastille Day concert in Paris with an image of the party's leader, Marine Le Pen, with a swastika on her forehead.

"I've heard that a certain Marine Le Pen was upset with me," Madonna told the crowd, according to the newspaper Le Parisien. "It's not my intention to make enemies."

commercial outdoor power equipment - What A New Landscape ...

commercial outdoor power equipment More Details about commercial outdoor power equipment here.

A landscape maintenance business handles a variety of different tasks on properties ranging from gardening and lawn care to snow removal and debris pickup. The specific set of skills that a business offers to clients helps to establish what type of properties will be maintained. Industrious companies with many varied employees might work for a city maintaining a large park. Smaller businesses typically work for individual homeowners with small to moderately sized properties. Anyone who is considering starting a landscape maintenance business needs to acquire the skills and gear necessary in order to operate professionally.

Purchase Tools

The first step in starting a landscape maintenance business is to purchase all of the tools needed for the most common tasks. It is important to understand that some standard retail power tools are not a good investment for professionals and will break quickly if used for long hours every day. Commercial outdoor power equipment is designed to be durable and is able to handle long hours of daily use. Professional weed eaters are just one example of something that every maintenance company should have. Professional weed eaters come with a powerful motor and strong lines that remove weeds, trim grass and create edges for as long as is needed.

Practice

It is important that everyone who is going to be performing landscape maintenance knows exactly how to use the commercial outdoor power equipment that was purchased. This involves proper training for workers and testing each tool to check exactly how it works, as well as learning the limitations of each piece of equipment. Workers who do not know how to use commercial hedge trimmers might make mistakes because the operation of the specific trimmers is not fully understood. A poor understanding of the commercial outdoor power equipment that is being used will produce unprofessional results.

Learn About Lawn Care And Landscaping

Many landscape maintenance businesses do more than just trim grass and hedges. Complete lawn care and landscaping services need to be concerned about how plants grow, watering requirements and the differences between popular types of plant material that must be managed regularly. This involves learning some basic gardening techniques, the life cycle of the different types of trees and plants as well as some information about the climate and weather in the region. Some states require a pesticide applicator's license for commercial use. When used together, this knowledge will help when determining how short to cut grass, when a tree needs to be removed and how much fertilizer or other treatments that a lawn needs. Just a small amount of this type of knowledge and training will enable a landscape maintenance business to offer more services to customers.

Senegal spoil Team GB's football party

Senegal spoiled Great Britain's long-awaited return to Olympic football on Thursday, snatching a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw in a bruising encounter at Old Trafford.

Moussa Konate's 82nd minute leveller prevented Britain from making a winning start to their first appearance in an Olympic football tournament for 52 years after Craig Bellamy had fired the hosts into the lead.

Britain almost grabbed a late winner when substitute Marvin Sordell struck the woodwork two minutes from time, but Senegal held on for a share of the points after a physical Group A tussle.

It was a frustrating outcome for the hosts, who should have been awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after goalscorer Bellamy was clattered in the area in an atrocious challenge by Senegal defender Saliou Ciss.

After a slow start, Britain had taken the lead midway through the first half with captain Ryan Giggs and Bellamy combining to score.

Manchester United star Giggs, who at the age of 38 became the oldest man to play in the Olympic football competition, swung in a free-kick from the right. Steven Caulker's aerial challenge caused confusion in the Senegal box, and the ball fell kindly for Bellamy who drove an angled shot beyond Ousmane Mane.

Senegal should have equalised shortly afterwards however when a horrendous mistake from Jack Butland let in Sadio Mane.

Butland's mis-hit clearance went straight to Mane near the edge of the area, but the Senegal striker's chipped effort drifted disappointingly wide to spare the British goalkeeper's blushes.

An open second half saw both sides carve out promising opportunities but Senegal were fortunate to finish with 11 men after some uncompromising challenges went unpunished by Ravshan Irmatov.

Common Ground On Gun Control?

By Frank Jack Fiamingo

Common Ground, Gun Control

Common Ground, Gun Control

New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)- Most people will acknowledge that it is not guns but rather the misuse of guns that is the real problem.

I believe that most ?gun control? advocates simply want to prevent the loss of innocent life and that those of us who use firearms for sport, hunting, recreation and defense of self and family abhor the initiation of violence.

We all want the same thing; to see an end to the senseless slaughter. There is more common ground than one might at first suspect.

The difficulty revolves around how different people believe we can and should solve the actual problem of violence.

I am sure we would all be just as horrified if a murderer used a bomb, a machete or a gun. Perhaps we all need to focus on what drives a person to kill rather than on how they achieve their goal. The result is always the same. Families will never again share the joy of life with their murdered loved ones. They are left to mourn and grieve while trying to understand the incomprehensible.

All the rhetoric in the world will not solve the real problem. There are truly evil people in the world who murder for their own reasons. Some kill for gain, some to avoid responsibility and (as much as it sickens rational people), some individuals kill because they enjoy it. In many cases, I am sure the murderer is simply deranged.

A significant reason why we cannot prevent these murders is simply because we cannot predict them. Although it is not common, a person who appears perfectly normal one day, may experience a break from reality, choose a weapon and begin murdering people for absolutely no reason. We often have no indication whatsoever who that person might be. The arm-chair analysts who perform the post mortems on these events are never there the day before to prevent them.

If they were, we would not need to have this conversation.

Some people believe that you can reduce the number of murders by controlling both the availability and the type of firearms people are allowed to possess. The problem is that although this approach MIGHT possibly prevent a murderer from using a particular firearm to commit his crime, it is FAR from a guarantee that he or she will not find another method of creating mayhem. In fact, since only those individuals who are sane and responsible follow the dictates of firearms regulations, it is unlikely that laws controlling the LEGAL access to firearms would prevent the murderer from using them.

You might say, ?Well it can?t hurt?, but that is not accurate. It can and does hurt to prevent legal access to firearms to a woman seeking to protect her body from a much larger assailant or to a parent protecting his or her family from a neighborhood gang intent on stealing the family car and raping the occupants. I find it difficult to believe that THAT is the intent of those who are trying to PREVENT the murder of innocent people. That just doesn?t make any sense.

I did not write this essay with the illusion that I could single handedly solve the problem of ?gun control? in New Jersey or across the nation. I am hoping that it will be possible to open up some real productive dialogue on how we can work together with people who hold various positions on this issue to make some progress toward finding some practical solutions. Perhaps there is no way to prevent random acts of violence but perhaps we can try to identify those instances where there are telltale signs; perhaps not. I don?t know if that is possible but what I do know is that it is just as unproductive to shout ?FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!? as it is to shout ?GUNS KILL!?.

I invite anyone with a constructive opinion on these issues to feel free to contact me. Let?s at least think about the problem constructively and try to avoid the usual rhetoric. We already know THAT doesn?t work. Everyone seems to continue to offer the same arguments expecting different results. Perhaps we are all missing something.

Thank you Frank Jack Fiamingo President@nj2as.com

The Honey Pot: Our Family Tree

Here is our family tree for all of you inquiring minds who have asked.

Fasten your seat belts and get ready for a ride...

This is me and my husband.

Nick and Stephanie

@nickholden and @honeyholden on instagram.

We have three daughters.

Elizabeth, Lydia ?and Lauren.

?@babylady3 @lydialovesmarcus and @laurenalexis19

?This was the original 5 Holdens..

Then our girls began to meet their guys.

I'm gonna go from RIGHT to left to keep it all chronological and stuff.

Elizabeth married Chris (@chrissirven) and they became the Sirven family.

They have three children who call me Honey. ?Rosalyn, Julia Rose and Nate.

Next we have Mr. and Mrs. Linton...Lydia and Marcus (@mlinton1215)
You've been reading quite a bit about these two lately ;)

And last but not least is Lauren. She's still a Holden. ?(Woo Hoo!!)

But the really tall guy on the left is crazy about her so we will ?probably have another wedding in the near future. ?His name is Blake.
He's not on instagram but you can call him Blakey-Poo like the rest of us.

?Ok. That was easy to follow.

Now let me kick it up a bit.

A lot of y'all have put two and two together and have figured out the other "Holden girl" in blog land and instagram is indeed related to me. ?In fact we are sister-in-laws. ?Our hubs are brothers.

She is @heatherholden and she's got a really amazing blog called wearetheholdens.
If you aren't following her, you should. ?She has the skills of Martha Stewart and Paula Deen and dresses like she stepped out of an Anthro catalog ?all while buying just about every cute thing she wears and owns from the thrift store.. the girls got skillz I tell ya.

This is her good looking mister

(sorry heather...i had to.)

No..really they are an amazing looking bunch.

There are 3 Holden brothers.

This pic is totally out of chronological order.?

Nick is the oldest (on right)

Jeremy is the middle. (on left)

Jode is the youngest (in the middle)

They are married to us...

Joice belongs to Jeremy.

I belong to Nick.

Heather belongs to Jode.

This is Jeremy's clan.

Joicey-Poo (yes she's the other "poo" in the family) has some serious skills too.

She can homeschool a house full of kids, whip up supper for her and two other families, then go visit ?those families, gather eggs from their yard full of chickens, put together anything you give her without the directions, teach a bible study and rub Jeremy's feet all in a days work... and never complain.?I?wish she had a blog. ?I'd learn so much from her.

She and Jeremy's bunch are as cute as they come.

Ok...So all that is pretty normal right?

Well here is where it gets fun...

Here are the Holden boys and their dad, Mr. Bubby.

Handsome bunch huh!

?Now this sweet lady is their momma.... My mother-in-law.

And this guy in the pic is her husband.?

Who also happens to be my brother.?

Yeah... you read that right.

My brother is married to my mother-in-law.
So my mother-in law is also my sister-in-law!

This is my big bother, my mom and me.

He is also my father-in-law and my mom is my grandma.

Have I lost you yet?

Before you start thinking we are some crazy family from the south who marrys their cousins...

I promise this is all legit. ?No blood relations at all.

??

Funny thing though.. My mom is my mother-in-law's mother-in-law.
Yeah go ahead and re-read that again. ?I know you need to.

This also makes my mom my girl's grand maw and great grandma at the same time.

Oh and this makes my girls my great nieces.

This also makes Nick my nephew and?

his mom is technically his sister in law.

My brother is his step-dad...?

I could go on and on.

I know by now I have totally lost you.

So here is a very brief bio to explain it some.
Nick and I got married at a very young age.
His parents divorced that same year.
She then met my brother ( who is quite older than me for the record).
They began to date, fell in love, ?and eventually got married.
And in case you're wondering, no... the entire family was not exactly thrilled.
All of this was before any of us knew Jesus.
It was quite a turbulent season for all of us.
My brother at the time had an addiction to drugs and alcohol and was not exactly great "husband material". ?Our family was dysfunctional in every essence of the word.

Well y'all. ?God showed up and interrupted our lives and began to sweep through our family like a wildfire. ?Two words that stand out during this time is
1. Grace
2. Change

You see until this time...the only ones who knew the Lord in our family were my mom and my step-dad. (my dad passed away when I was 13, my mom eventually remarried and he's a pastor) I have no doubt it was their intercession and prayers for us that were instrumental in us coming to a place of saving grace. (That's a whole post right there!) ?We look back at old videos and see all the drinking and cussing and carrying on and I'm SO ashamed we acted like that around them. ?I asked her years later why they never fussed at us and told us how offensive we were and disrespectful to their position of being the parents.. the "head" our family... ?In her wisdom of knowing the Lord for 41 years now, she said, "Stephanie, there was no need to fight with y'all.. ?I knew the battle was a spiritual one. So we just prayed for y'all."
?She loved us and prayed us right into the Kingdom.

Well, Ms Dianne (my mom-in-law) was the first to get intterputed by Jesus.

And wow let me tell you it not only interrupted her life but all of ours.
I can remember that first Thanksiving after she had first gotten saved. (by saved I mean when she realized she was born a sinner and yielded her life to Jesus and He then redeemed her and saved her from a self-centered life and eternity apart from Him). ?Well, that Thanksgiving she was so different!
And it made me so uncomfortable! ?All she wanted to talk about was Jesus and tell us about her church and she kept smiling and stuff. ?It was a total interruption to our family get togethers....All the drinking and cutting up seemed to stand out that year and for me it was the first time I was confronted with my life full of religion.? I had been brought up in the church all my life and professed to know Jesus but it was at that Thanksgiving that I realized I didn't have what she had. ?At this point, I wasn't even sure I wanted what she had...maybe a little bit of it but definitely not as much of Jesus as her!
?I mean she had become a little "finatical" ?in my book. lol ?Little did I know back then.

You see, now my Mom and Mr. Roy had a partner to join forces with them in battle for our family spiritually in prayer. ?And God honored it y'all. ?Within a month... My brother (the one married to Nick's mom) got saved and set free from all of his addictions! ?Then a few months later, I got saved. ?Then Nick got saved and right around that time.. both of his brothers, Jode and Jeremy got saved. ?It was crazy y'all in an incredible unbelievable kind of way.

And God was SOOO not finished doing His thing in our family....

We all began to grow in the Lord and love His word and then the Lord went and shook things up even more. ?He began dealing with the men in our family....As in calling them to preach.
Now anytime He does this it's a miracle and incredible. ?But y'all. ?If you only knew my family before, you would know this is like "part the Red Sea" kind of incredible.

  • He called my brother first. ?A high school drop-out drug addict to preach His glorious gospel. Pretty awesome huh! ?
  • Then he called my husband. At the time he was one of the shyest people you could ever meet. ?I had never even heard him pray out loud and he's telling me he feels "called" to preach. ?This is a man who had never even read an entire book and now he is eating up his bible every second of the day.
  • Somewhere along the lines...he called Nick's youngest brother, Jode, into ministry and gifted him with crazy talents to lead worship and lead students.?
  • And Nick's other brother, Jeremy is one of the most gifted teachers of the word I know. ?He serves faithfully in many different capacities at his church. He's one of greatest servants I know.

None of these men were brought up in church.
None of them had a godly heritage or foundation.
Their lives are just an example of what God does when He saves a person.?

?Change takes place.

And y'all...my my, how our family has changed.
?Everything about our family has changed.

This was my brother back in the day when drugs was what he lived for.

Now he lives to help others be set free!

(Well he lives for deer season too but that's another story, lol)

This picture was taken when he graduated from New Orleans Theological Seminarry. ?God did that!!

This was taken a few years back at Marvin's church when they were celebrating a new family life center that they had just built and had begun worshipping in.
These are all the men in our family (minus Marcus who we didn't know at the time BUT his family actually played bluegrass at this very celebration!! Lydia now tells us she was scoping him out all day!)
All these men serve the Lord with their lives and lead our families within our homes.
Good googily woogily!! ?God did that!

Here's me and Heather back in the day.
(just felt like throwing that in...we call that lagniappe back home...a little something extra)
And here is our entire crew today!
Just one big intertwined- crazy- Jesus loving-family.

Remember...y'all did ask for our family tree!
Don't hold all the craziness against me....
I'm just along for the ride but I do admit..
I'm loving every second of it!!

Stephanie :)

Wow, I need a lot of help. I'm quite overwhelmed.

Hello, hi. I guess I should start by introducing myself?

First off, thank you sincerely for taking the time to read this. My name is Elenore (I realize the spelling is weird. My school even spelled it wrong on my high school diploma.) and I basically live for the tediousness of character building. I really, really love throwing characters into situation "arenas" and analyzing how they would properly react. Anyway, although I have been writing/roleplaying as long as I can remember, I could never muster the right amount of confidence to join an actual "community" dedicated to these sort of things I like. My only serious roleplays have been more intimate one-on-ones with friends. Roleplaying on boards with multiple people was kind of a distant idea that I always wanted to do eventually, but at the time it seemed tedious. Well, my friends and I are all off to college, and while they'll be too busy to continue our elaborate, years-in-process roleplays once they begin classes, I'm going to be thrown into creative writing labs where I'll have no choice but to expose my ideas to the public and pump out words and ideas at a breakneck pace - and trust me, it's not going to be an easy adaption.

Baby steps, right? I figure now is a good as any time to join a forum... I can get used to putting my characters out there and eventually grow and improve from it. Plus, hopefully I'll get to meet some awesome people as an addition.

I have no idea what's here and no idea how all of this works. I can only tell you what I'm used to and what I've done in the past, and hopefully some helpful person might lead me in the right direction!

So, here are the type of roleplays I'm used to:
- modern, for the most part realistic roleplays
- or time-period genres (ex: frontier, old west, depression era, etc.)
- all original characters
- mature, well thought out writing, but without that kind of "uncomfortably uptight" atmosphere
(I believe it's good to have others above and below your own skill level because you can grow, and others can grow and learn from you.)
- heavily character based, situation based. less "epic" plot style, more character... very in-depth character development
- character interactions that make sense, are well-developed, etc.

My first question... would I be able to find these here, and how? I majority of what I saw were fantasy roleplays, which are cool but not really my style.

Also, do people ever practice "one on one" style roleplays in this community? Is there a topic on roleplay forum etiquette I could read? Being a first-timer to these forums so late in the game, will it be difficult to be "let in" to roleplays?

And one more question for now... I saw a characters tab in the profile section, but I couldn't figure out how to add a character and there were no links. How does that work? How do others usually set up character profiles; what's expected?

Much, much, much appreciation to you for reading my ramblings, and I'm very glad to meet you. Also, even if your genres vary from mine, I'm open to new ideas and I would still love to meet you!

Thanks,
Ele

Artificial jellyfish swims in a heartbeat

Monday, July 23, 2012

Using recent advances in marine biomechanics, materials science, and tissue engineering, a team of researchers at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have turned inanimate silicone and living cardiac muscle cells into a freely swimming "jellyfish."

The finding serves as a proof of concept for reverse engineering a variety of muscular organs and simple life forms. It also suggests a broader definition of what counts as synthetic life in an emerging field that has primarily focused on replicating life's building blocks.

The researchers' method for building the tissue-engineered jellyfish, dubbed "Medusoid," was published in a Nature Biotechnology paper on July 22.

An expert in cell- and tissue-powered actuators, coauthor Kevin Kit Parker has previously demonstrated bioengineered constructs that can grip, pump, and even walk. The inspiration to raise the bar and mimic a jellyfish came out of his own frustration with the state of the cardiac field.

Similar to the way a human heart moves blood throughout the body, jellyfish propel themselves through the water by pumping. In figuring out how to take apart and then rebuild the primary motor function of a jellyfish, the aim was to gain new insights into how such pumps really worked.

"It occurred to me in 2007 that we might have failed to understand the fundamental laws of muscular pumps," says Parker, Tarr Family Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard. "I started looking at marine organisms that pump to survive. Then I saw a jellyfish at the New England Aquarium and I immediately noted both similarities and differences between how the jellyfish and the human heart pump."

To build the Medusoid, Parker collaborated with Janna Nawroth, a doctoral student in biology at Caltech and lead author of the study, who performed the work as a visiting researcher in Parker's lab. They also worked with Nawroth's adviser, John Dabiri, a professor of aeronautics and bioengineering at Caltech, who is an expert in biological propulsion.

"A big goal of our study was to advance tissue engineering," says Nawroth. "In many ways, it is still a very qualitative art, with people trying to copy a tissue or organ just based on what they think is important or what they see as the major components?without necessarily understanding if those components are relevant to the desired function or without analyzing first how different materials could be used."

It turned out that jellyfish, believed to be the oldest multi-organ animals in the world, were an ideal subject, as they use muscles to pump their way through water, and their basic morphology is similar to that of a beating human heart.

To reverse engineer a medusa jellyfish, the investigators used analysis tools borrowed from the fields of law enforcement biometrics and crystallography to make maps of the alignment of subcellular protein networks within all of the muscle cells within the animal. They then conducted studies to understand the electrophysiological triggering of jellyfish propulsion and the biomechanics of the propulsive stroke itself.

Based on such understanding, it turned out that a sheet of cultured rat heart muscle tissue that would contract when electrically stimulated in a liquid environment was the perfect raw material to create an ersatz jellyfish. The team then incorporated a silicone polymer that fashions the body of the artificial creature into a thin membrane that resembles a small jellyfish, with eight arm-like appendages.

Using the same analysis tools, the investigators were able to quantitatively match the subcellular, cellular, and supracellular architecture of the jellyfish musculature with the rat heart muscle cells.

The artificial construct was placed in container of ocean-like salt water and shocked into swimming with synchronized muscle contractions that mimic those of real jellyfish. (In fact, the muscle cells started to contract a bit on their own even before the electrical current was applied.)

"I was surprised that with relatively few components?a silicone base and cells that we arranged?we were able to reproduce some pretty complex swimming and feeding behaviors that you see in biological jellyfish," says Dabiri.

Their design strategy, they say, will be broadly applicable to the reverse engineering of muscular organs in humans.

"As engineers, we are very comfortable with building things out of steel, copper, concrete," says Parker. "I think of cells as another kind of building substrate, but we need rigorous quantitative design specs to move tissue engineering to a reproducible type of engineering. The jellyfish provides a design algorithm for reverse engineering an organ's function and developing quantitative design and performance specifications. We can complete the full exercise of the engineer's design process: design, build, and test."

In addition to advancing the field of tissue engineering, Parker adds that he took on the challenge of building a creature to challenge the traditional view of synthetic biology which is "focused on genetic manipulations of cells." Instead of building just a cell, he sought to "build a beast."

Looking forward, the researchers aim to further evolve the artificial jellyfish, allowing it to turn and move in a particular direction, and even incorporating a simple "brain" so it can respond to its environment and replicate more advanced behaviors like heading toward a light source and seeking energy or food.

Along with Parker, Nawroth, and Dabiri, contributors to the study included Hyungsuk Lee, Adam W. Feinberg, Crystal M. Ripplinger, Megan L. McCain, and Anna Grosberg, all at Harvard.

(AP) ? As the suspected gunman in the Colorado theater massacre heads to his first court appearance, authorities have disclosed that he is refusing to cooperate and that it could take months to learn what prompted the horrific attack on midnight moviegoers at a Batman film premiere.

James Holmes has been held in solitary confinement at an Arapahoe County detention facility but will be moved Monday to a next-door courtroom for a 9:30 a.m. MDT hearing, where the charges against him of suspicion of first degree murder will be read.

Holmes has been assigned a public defender and Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said that the 24-year-old former doctoral student has "lawyered up" since his arrest early Friday, following the shooting at an Aurora theater that left 12 dead and 58 wounded, some critically.

"He's not talking to us," the chief said.

Holmes has been held without bond at the lockup in Centennial, Colo., about 13 miles from the Aurora theater. He will be advised of the charges against him, and he could also face additional counts of aggravated assault and weapons violations.

On Sunday, officials at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus were looking into whether Holmes used his position in a graduate program to collect hazardous materials, but school officials weren't saying whether they knew he was anything more than a hard-working student.

Police have said that Holmes began buying guns at Denver-area stores nearly two months before Friday's shooting and that he received at least 50 packages in four months at his home and at school.

While the university disclosed that it was cooperating with police in the case, that disclosure was one of the few it has made three days after the massacre. It remained unclear whether Holmes' professors and other students at his 35-student Ph.D. program noticed anything unusual about his behavior.

His reasons for quitting the program in June, just a year into the five- to seven-year program, also remained a mystery.

Holmes recently took an intense, three-part oral exam that marks the end of the first year. Those who do well continue with their studies and shift to full-time research, while those who don't do well meet with advisers and discuss their options, including retaking the exam. University officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns.

The university said Holmes gave no reason for his withdrawal, a decision he made in June.

Holmes was not allowed access from the institution after his withdrawal, which was "standard operating procedure" because he was no longer affiliated with the school, said Jacque Montgomery, a spokeswoman for the medical school. Holmes had no contact with university police, she said.

The university declined to release any details of his academic record, citing privacy concerns, and at least two dozen professors and other staff declined to speak with The Associated Press. Some said they were instructed not to talk publicly about Holmes in a blanket email sent to university employees.

Montgomery said police have told the school to not talk about Holmes. The university took down the website for its graduate neuroscience program on Saturday.

Amid the continuing investigation of Holmes and his background, Sunday was a day for healing and remembrance in Aurora, with the community holding a prayer vigil and with President Barack Obama arriving to visit with families of the victims.

Obama said he told the families that "all of America and much of the world is thinking about them." He met with them at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, which treated 23 of the people injured in the mass shooting; 10 remain there, seven hurt critically.

Congregations across Colorado prayed for the shooting victims and their relatives. Elderly churchgoers at an aging Presbyterian church within walking distance near Holmes' apartment joined in prayer, though none had ever met him.

Several thousand gathered for healing at the vigil Sunday night, where a banner said, "Angels Walk With Those Who Grieve."

"You're not alone, and you will get through it," said the Rev. Kenneth Berve, pastor at Grant Avenue United Methodist Church and a witness to Friday's horrors. "We can't let fear and anger take control of us."

Meanwhile, the owner of a gun range told the AP that Holmes applied to join the club last month but never became a member because of his behavior and a "bizarre" message on his voice mail.

He emailed an application to join the Lead Valley Range in Byers on June 25 in which he said he was not a user of illegal drugs or a convicted felon, said owner Glenn Rotkovich. When Rotkovich called to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week, he said he heard a message on Holmes' voice mail that was "bizarre ? guttural, freakish at best."

He left two other messages but eventually told his staff to watch out for Holmes at the July 1 orientation and not to accept him into the club, Rotkovich said.

Ritchie Duong, a friend who has known Holmes for more than a decade, told the Los Angeles Times that in high school he liked to play cards and video games. They both attended undergraduate school at the University of California, Riverside, where they saw each other weekly to watch the TV show "Lost."

Duong last saw Holmes in December when they met for dinner in Los Angeles and saw a movie. His friend seemed fine, he told the newspaper. Academics came easily to Holmes both at high school and in college, Duong said.

"I had one college class with him, and he didn't even have to take notes or anything. He would just show up to class, sit there, and around test time he would always get an 'A,'" said Duong, 24.

The pastor for the family of the suspect also recalled a shy boy who was driven to succeed academically.

"He wasn't an extrovert at all. If there was any conversation, it would be because I initiated it, not because he did," said Jerald Borgie, senior pastor of Penasquitos Lutheran Church. Borgie said he never saw the suspect mingle with others his age at church. He last spoke with Holmes about six years ago.

"He had some goals. He wanted to succeed, he wanted to go out, and he wanted to be the best," Borgie said. "He took pride in his academic abilities. A good student. He didn't brag about it."

During the attack early Friday, Holmes allegedly set off gas canisters and used a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on theater-goers, Oates said. Holmes had bought the weapons at local gun stores in the past two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The gunman's semiautomatic assault rifle jammed during the attack, forcing him to switch to another gun with less firepower, a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press. That malfunction and weapons switch might have saved some lives.

Oates said a 100-round ammunition drum was found in the theater but said he did not know whether it jammed or emptied.

Investigators found a Batman mask inside Holmes' apartment after they finished clearing the home of booby traps and ammunition, a law enforcement official close to the investigation said Sunday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Across the street from the movie theater, Greg Zanis, of Aurora, Ill., who placed 15 crosses near Columbine High School after a 1999 massacre there, returned to Colorado with 12 crosses for the victims of Friday's shooting.
