US-Kurdistan Business Council Meets With Kurdistan Regional Government President Masoud Barzani

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United States-Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC) is visiting the Kurdistan Region on the largest ever trade mission of U.S. companies to the Region.

Over the past two days, the USKBC delegation of thirty companies met with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Masoud Barzani and several KRG ministers.

"The USKBC delegation was honored to have had the opportunity to meet with President Barzani," said USKBC President David Tafuri, "We hope to continue to engage the President and KRG ministers in a mutually beneficial dialogue regarding American business in the Kurdistan region."

In addition to the meeting with President Barzani, the USKBC met with the Minister of Electricity, the Minister of Trade and Industry, the Minister of Finance and Economy, the Minister of Natural Resources, Dr. Ashti Hawrami, as well as the Governor of Kirkuk, Dr. Najmiddin Karim.

The USKBC also hosted a well-attended business seminar in Erbil yesterday. Entitled "U.S. Business in Kurdistan," the seminar featured government officials and business people from both the United States and the Kurdistan Region. The seminar kicked off with opening remarks by USKBC President David Tafuri, followed by a discussion of the Kurdistan Regional Government perspective by Qubad Talabani, the KRG Minister for Coordination and Follow Up.

"The American business presence in Kurdistan is growing significantly," Julian Allen, Regional Director of GardaWorld and USKBC member, said. "We held the seminar to highlight the importance of US-Kurdistan commercial relations as well as to strengthen the US business community's knowledge of and contribution to the Region's development."

At the business seminar, Allen was one of three panelists who discussed doing business with the US business community. A second panel focused on navigating the Kurdistan market. The seminar concluded with remarks by keynote speaker Tim Pounds, the Acting Consul General of the US Consulate in Erbil.

The USKBC delegation next travels to the Kurdistan city of Sulaimani to meet with provincial leaders and members of the business community.

"Advising companies on how to do business in Kurdistan is extremely important," Tafuri said. "Highlighting specific opportunities in this emerging market and how to pursue those opportunities are key goals of the USKBC.
