Rafael Pereira and Alan Donato pass through Round 1 at San - Bettor

Rafael Pereira and Alan Donato pass through Round 1 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz unharmed

Venezuela?s Rafael Pereira and Brazil?s Alan Donato successfully made it through into the second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 1 heats, with the 17th heat taking place on Tuesday, Auguest 28, while the 18th heat took place on Wednesday, August 29 at the primary event site of Zarautz in Basque Country in Spain.

Portugal?s Vasco Ribeiro and Argentina?s Santiago Muniz were able to secure their place in the next round of the competition after clinching second-place finish in their respective heats.

With a handsome prize cheque along with coveted ASP ranking points on offer, there was plenty of reason or the young surfing talent from around the globe to push hard during the initial stages of the latest ASP?6-Star event. The clean one-to-two foot waves were not making it easy for the surfers to really unleash their true fire-power, but that hardly kept them from trying.

The 17th heat pitted Pereira against Ribeiro, South Africa?s David Van Zyl and Germany?s Alexander El Naib in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.

As the battle got underway, Pereira got off to an excellent start, earning an impressive 7.33 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 5.77 points to his account, thus reaching a decisive heat-total of 13.10 points.

The show put on by Ribeiro was not too shabby either, with him managing to reap a 5.77 and 7.17 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 12.94 points. The effort proved sufficient to carry him through into the next round.

Van Zyl and El Nail failed to make the Round 2 cut after scoring a heat-total of 7.66 and 1.06 points respectively.

Donato managed to get the better of Muniz, France?s Pierre-Valentin Labo and Netherland?s Remi Petersen in the 18th heat.

The Brazilian surfer got off to an energetic start and navigated his way to a solid wave, which he utilised to post a 5.17 on the score-board. He backed it up with an impressive and decisive 7.10-point ride to reach a heat-total of 12.27 points, which served to earn him top honours.

Muniz scored a 5.60 and 6.17 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.77 points, with the score turning out to be adequate to take him through into the next round.

Labo finished in third place with a heat-total of 7.97 points, while Petersen settled for fourth place after registering a two-wave total of 5.67 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.
